Walmart opens 1MW wind turbine at distribution center in California
Walmart has inaugurated a new GE SLE 1MW wind turbine at its distribution center in Red Bluff, California.
The turbine with a 265ft tower and a 250ft blade, is expected to generate 2,200,000KWh and provide 20% of the distribution center's annual electricity use.
Walmart has signed a power purchase agreement with Foundation Windpower, under which the latter owns and operates the turbine, while the former will purchase the power.
Foundation Windpower president John Pimentel said, "Foundation Windpower now has 22 Megawatts of distributed wind projects in California and looks forward to completing additional similar projects across the country."
Walmart Energy vice president Kim Saylors-Laster said the company will continue to explore renewable energy alternatives and reduce its utility costs throughout the country.
The Red Bluff wind turbine is one of the 180 renewable energy measures being undertaken by the of the retail chain worldwide to shift to 100% renewable energy.
The current wind energy projects of Walmart include a 90MW wind farm in West Texas, which provides 15% of power to about 300 Walmart stores.
