Vestas to supply turbines for 424MW wind project in Mexico

Published 16 August 2017

Danish wind turbine-maker Vestas has received an order to supply 123 of its V136-3.45MW that amount to 424MW, for a wind project in Mexico.

The order has been placed by Zuma Energía for its Parque Eólico Reynosa project. This wind project will be located in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. This project is considered to be one of the largest wind projects in Latin America.

The order also includes a 15 year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM5000) service contract, under which Vestas will maximise the energy output from each of the wind turbines.

Vestas is expected to start the delivery in late 2017 and installation, testing and commissioning will take place in 2018.

Zuma Energía CEO Adrián Katzew said: “Mexico is undergoing a historical moment in its energy policy and we are extremely pleased to play an active role in this process. By building Mexico’s largest wind park with Vestas’ turbines we are taking a bold step in the country’s transition towards renewable.”

Vestas Mexico and northern Latin America managing director Angélica Ruiz Celis said: “Tamaulipas has a leading position in the country within wind energy and we are proud to be part of this by installing the Reynosa project.

“The blades for V136-3.45 MW projects in Latin America will be produced in Mexico which underlines our long-term localisation strategy in Mexico and Vestas’ strong commitment to support Mexico´s renewable target of 35 percent of clean energy by 2024.”

In July, Vestas secured two separate orders totalling 502MW in the US. The first is a 302MW order, placed by MidAmerican Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

The second is 200MW order, where in Vestas will supply 100 of its V110-2.0MW turbines. However, the details about the company that placed the order and the value of the order were not disclosed.
