Vestas to supply turbines for 270MW Sapphire wind farm in Australia

Published 13 December 2016

Vestas has secured an order to supply turbines for the 270MW Sapphire wind farm in New South Wales, Australia.

The order was placed by SWF Nominees, a partnership between CWP Renewables and funds managed and/or advised by global private markets investment manager Partners Group.

Vestas will supply and install 75 units of its V126-3.45 MW turbines with power optimised mode to 3.6MW.

The order also includes an active output management service contract for about 10 years.

The Danish firm will build the project in partnership with civil and electrical contractor Zenviron.

The Sapphire wind farm, which will be located near the town of Glen Innes, is expected to be completed in the second half of 2018.

After completion, the wind farm is estimated to generate enough power for about 110,000 local homes, and reduce 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Australian government-owned green bank, Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), has made a commitment to provide A$120m ($89m) in the $588m wind project.

Project developer CWP Renewables owns a minority stake in the wind farm, which co-financed by Commonwealth Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and EKF, Denmark’s export credit agency. Partners Group has provided most of the equity funding.

CWP Renewables managing director Alex Hewitt said: “The Sapphire Wind Farm has been a major project undertaking for CWP and we are grateful for the professional support received from Vestas throughout the development, procurement, and contracting processes.”

Partners Group Asia-Pacific, managing director and private Infrastructure head Benjamin Haan said: “To meet the Australian government's Renewable Energy Target, a significant amount of renewable capacity needs to be built out in the next few years.

“We are pleased to team up with high-quality partners, including Vestas, to contribute to this target with the construction of Sapphire Wind Farm, another milestone project for Australian renewable energy."
