VBMS secures inter-array cabling contract for Albatros wind farm in Germany

VBMS has won a contract to supply inter-array cables for the 112MW Albatros offshore wind farm to be located in the German North Sea.

The wind farm is situated 105km from the coast in the German sector of the North Sea.

Under the contract with EnBW Albatros, VBMS will supply, install and test nineteen of 33kV inter-array cables at the wind farm.

The installation of the cables is expected to start in 2019 and will follow the installation of 79 inter-array cables at the nearby 497MW Hohe See offshore wind farm.

Under the Albatros contract, VBMS will also interconnect both wind farms.

EnBW said the integration of the two wind farms to the grid at the same time will unlock a potential of adding 610MW capacity to the grid.

Siemens is the main contractor for the Albatros wind farm. VBMS is one of the sub-contractors for the project.

The wind farm will include 16 Siemens’ SWT-7.0-154 turbines, each with a capacity to produce 7MW. The turbines will be supported using grounded monopile structures.

When the Albatros wind farm starts operations, it could offset about 160,315 tonnes of CO2, about 3700 tonnes of SO2, while generating enough electricity to power at least 7900 German households.

Together, both Hohe and Albatros are expected to offset about 1.9 million tonnes of CO2, while providing 2.5 million MWh of electricity, which will be enough to power about 710,000 households in Germany.
