Vattenfall wins tender to build Dutch offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Zuid

CTBR Staff Writer Published 20 March 2018

Swedish energy company Vattenfall has won a tender for the construction of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm, which is expected to have capacity of 700-750MW, in the Netherlands.

The company stated that the wind farm could generate electricity for 1 to 1.5 million Dutch homes.

The Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm could be located 22.2km off the west coast of the Netherlands in the North Sea and is expected to take up to 356 km2 of total space.

As per the tender rules, the wind farm needs to be fully operational within 5 years.

The company now needs to make the final preparations for the offshore wind project including the design of the wind farm, continuation of an internal planning and finalizing the tender process for the major components that go into the wind farm.

Vattenfall president and CEO Magnus Hall said: "This is excellent news for Vattenfall and the Netherlands. It is a significant step for us in view of our ambitions to grow in renewable energy production. We have previously announced that we intend to invest SEK13bn (€1.5bn) in growth investments in wind power for the period 2017-2018.

“The Netherlands is an important market for us and this will be our second offshore project there. It’s a great honor for us to get the opportunity to contribute with this project to the transformation of the Dutch energy system.”

In October last year, Vattenfall has announced that start of construction work on the 406.7MW Horns Rev 3 wind farm off the coast of Danish North Sea.

Apart from Horns Rev 3, Vattenfall also plans to construct the Danish Kriegers Flak and Vesterhav South and North wind farms in the coming years.

The company had also placed an order with Siemens Gamesa for the supply of nearly 1GW of wind turbines for three offshore wind farms.
