Siemens wins turbine supply contract for East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm

CTBR Staff Writer Published 28 April 2016

Siemens has secured a contract to supply wind turbines for ScottishPower Renewables' 714MW East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm in the UK.

Under the deal, Siemens will supply, install and commission the 102 7MW wind turbines. The contract also includes a 5-year servicing deal.

Siemens wind power and renewables division offshore CEO Michael Hannibal said: "This represents the largest single order ever for our direct-drive, 7-megawatt wind turbine. The decision to go with our innovative wind turbines underscores the contribution made by these units to reducing the costs of offshore wind power."

The Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC) has confirmed that the wind farm's £119/MWh Contract for Difference (CfD) milestone has been reached.

ScottishPower Renewables CEO Keith Anderson said: "We have concluded Europe's largest project-specific wind turbine agreement just a month after taking our final investment decision, and we have scaled the final hurdle by satisfying our CfD conditions with the Low Carbon Contracts Company.

"It is now full steam ahead for East Anglia ONE, with ground set to be broken early next year."

The £2.5bn East Anglia ONE project will be located around 45km off the British east coast over an area of 300km². It is expected to be fully operational during 2020.

After completion, the project will generate enough energy for about 500,000 homes or the majority of the households in Suffolk and Norfolk.

Two offshore export cables, each about 85 km in length, will transfer the electricity to shore and a landfall site with onshore transition pits will link the offshore and onshore cables.

A planned onshore substation adjacent to the existing substation at Bramford, Suffolk, will link the windfarm to the National Grid.
