Siemens Games secures order to supply 97MW turbines in Argentina

CTBR Staff Writer Published 21 September 2017

Spanish wind turbine-maker Siemens Gamesa has received an order to supply turbines for a 97MW wind farm in Argentina.

The order has been placed by Parque Eólico Arauco SAPEM to supply the turbines for the third and fourth phases of the Arauco wind complex, located in the province of La Rioja, in western Argentina.

As per the order, Siemens Gamesa will supply and install 28 of its G132-3.465 MW wind turbines. The company says that the order is its first from the South American country and claims that order exemplifies the G132-3.465MW model’s success and credibility in the market.

The wind turbines are scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2018 and the facility is expected to have the turbines installed and commissioned, either in the last quarter of 2018 or the first quarter of 2019.

Siemens Gamesa Latin America CEO José Antonio Miranda said: “Execution of this order marks an important milestone for Siemens Gamesa as it reinforces its position in a market that presents tremendous upside in wind power.

“This project falls under the scope of the RenovAr 1.5 project launched by the Argentine government in 2016 to foster investment in the renewable energy sector. The country has set itself the target of meeting 8% of demand for electricity from renewable sources in 2017 and 20% by 2025."

The company opined that the order will help in improving its commitment in developing local supply chain, as manufacturing the turbine towers was commissioned in the country.

Arauco SAPEM wind complex CEO Juan Fernando Carbel said: “By combining Spanish nacelles with locally-made towers - a part that constitutes a substantial portion of the turbines - the domestic Argentine industry is being drawn into this important endeavour, creating manufacturing jobs in the country.”

Recently, Siemens Gamesa received an order to supply 150 of its G114-2.0MW turbines at the Xilinhot complex in Inner Mongolia in China. As part of the supply order, the company will also provide long term operations and maintenance services as well.
