Published 02 August 2017

Broomfield, Colorado-based Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES) has agreed to sell the 148MW Cactus Flats wind farm in Texas to Southern Company’s subsidiary Southern Power.

The wind farm, which is developed by RES, is located in Concho County, Texas, between San Angelo and Brady.

The wind farm is expected to have 43 of Vestas’ wind turbines, each with a capacity to produce 3.44MW of clean energy.

The project is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2018. The clean energy generated from the wind farm along with the associated renewable energy credits (RECs) will be sold to General Mills and General Motors as per two separate power purchase agreements (PPAs).

General Mills and General Motors, both have the option to keep or sell their RECs.

After the completion of the project, Vestas will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the wind farm with Southern Power.

During the peak of construction, the project is expected to create about 300 jobs.

RES Americas director Douglas McAlpine said: “Cactus Flats is the next significant step in our partnership with Southern Power, one of the premier owners and investors in renewable energy assets in the United States.

“This project is a demonstration of our mutual commitment to a sustainable future and growing the economy through renewable development.”

With the acquisition of this project, Southern Power has increased its wind capacity to 1.5GW. The company has a fleet of 3.4GW of renewable energy projects which include 37 solar, wind and biomass facilities, located in the US.

Southern Power president and CEO Buzz Miller said "With the energy landscape constantly changing, we remain focused on strategic opportunities that support our business objectives.

"The Cactus Flats Wind Facility is an important addition to our growing renewable portfolio and will provide value to our customers through clean, safe, reliable and affordable wholesale energy."
