Platte River Power Authority signs PPA for 150MW Colorado wind farm

CTBR Staff Writer Published 24 January 2018

Platte River Power Authority has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to serve four of its owner municipalities including Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland with a new 150MW wind farm.

The new wind farm will be located 20 miles north of Platte River’s Rawhide Energy Station and is expected to include 75 wind turbines on a 14,000 acre piece of land. Enyo Renewable Energy’s subsidiary Roundhouse Renewable Energy will be responsible for the construction of the wind farm.

The company will also take care of additional transmission capacity needed to bring carbon-free energy directly to Platte River’s transmission system at the Rawhide Station, which is expected to nearly triple Platte River’s existing output.

Presently, more than 30% of the electricity supplied to Platte River’s owner municipalities is being generated from carbon-free resources including hydro, wind and solar.

By adding 150MW of wind power by 2020, Platte River is expected to achieve 48% of carbon-free energy portfolio for its customers.

Platte River Power Authority CEO Jason Frisbie said: “Platte River took a giant leap today to further diversify the energy portfolio serving northern Colorado.

“With this acquisition, we will dramatically increase our non-carbon energy footprint on behalf of our municipalities and northern Colorado residents.”

In 1998, Platte River became the first utility to provide electricity from wind energy to its customers in Colorado. Its current wind power portfolio three separate PPAs with a combined capacity of 78MW coming from three wind farms located in northern Colorado and Wyoming.
