Orange Renewable wins bidding to build 200MW wind project in south India

Published 19 October 2017

Orange Renewable, a subsidiary of AT Holdings, has won the bidding conducted by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to construct a 200MW wind project in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Orange Renewable has won the bidding after it submitted the lowest bidding of INR2.64 per unit ($0.041), which is claimed to be the lowest tariff in India.

The wind project is expected to generate enough clean electricity to be supplied to 150,000 Indian households, while offsetting 650,000 tons of CO2.

The wind project will be built in Toothukudi district of Tamil Nadu and will be connected to the inter-state transmission system/national grid.

Orange Renewable wind business CEO Sudhir Nunes said: “It is nothing short of a historic achievement for a young and steadily growing IPP like Orange.

"We were able to achieve our targeted returns at such a low tariff through a of combination factors, including: ownership of critical development assets in a site with strong wind resource, strong relationships with global suppliers of lowest cost of energy technology, cost economy of scale associated with a single 200MW project, efficient sourcing of capital, sophisticated and innovative contracts and low offtake risks in terms of PPA and evacuation."

Separately, the company has announced the commissioning of a total capacity of 140MW solar PV projects in the state of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The projects were also secured in a bidding conducted by SECI in 2016.

Orange Renewable is based in New Delhi, India. It is focused on the development, construction and operation of renewable energy projects in wind and solar across the country.

The company has its presence in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
