MHI Vestas to supply turbines for 406MW Horns Rev 3 offshore project in Denmark

CTBR Staff Writer Published 08 July 2016

Vattenfall has awarded a contract to MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for 49 V164-8.0 MW turbines, which will be used at the Horns Rev 3 offshore wind project in Denmark.

The order also includes a five year full scope service contract to optimise power production.

MHI Vestas said the 8MW turbines have been optimised for the project, using a power mode to be able to deliver a maximum output of 8.3MW.

The project will be located in the Northern Sea about 34km from the coast and will lie in the shallow depths of Horns Rev between 10m and 20m.

Electricity produced at the wind farm will be transmitted through 2 export cables with an average length of 33km. The transmission type includes high voltage alternating current (HVAC) with nominal voltage of 220kV and maximum voltage of 245kV.

When operational, the project is expected to produce enough electricity to power at least 400,000 Danish households and help eliminate 580,000 tonnes of CO2 and 13,000 tonnes of SO2 being released into the atmosphere.

MHI Vestas CEO Jens Tommerup said: "Larger and more powerful wind turbines are a key driver of cost reduction. The use of an 8.3 MW power mode with the large 164 m rotor diameter provides an optimised rotor to generator ratio, demonstrating our ongoing focus on improving our technology, continuing to maximise value for our customers."

Vattenfall wind head Gunnar Groebler said: "Horns Rev 3 is a real milestone for us, it clearly shows that competition is a suitable way to reduce costs for offshore wind significantly.

"Horns Rev 3 is the cheapest recent offshore project and the experience we have gained from our other wind projects had a very positive impact. This project underlines our ambition to lead the industry in a highly competitive market environment."
