India seeks expression of interest for 1GW offshore wind project

CTBR Staff Writer Published 12 April 2018

The Government of India has invited expression of interest (EOI) for a new 1GW offshore wind project to be constructed off the coast of Gujarat.

This EOI is part of the country’s ambition to have 5GW in offshore wind capacity by 2022.

On behalf of the government, the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) has issued the call for global companies with experience in developing at least 500MW in offshore wind projects.

The tender aims at developing offshore wind projects in the Gulf of Khambat, off the coast of Gujarat state.

The site for the wind farms could be located between 23 and 40km from the coast from Pipavav port. The proposed area is claimed to be around 400km2.

Indian wind energy developers or manufacturers can also participate in the tender, provided they partner with their global counterparts with experience on offshore wind in 500MW or above projects.

Another criterion that the NIWE has put in place is that the interested parties must have an annual turnover of more than INR5bn ($76m) for the past three years.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy official statement said: “The global expression of interest (EoI) is intended to shortlist prospective offshore wind energy developers for a 1GW offshore wind energy project in Gulf of Khambat, off the coast of Gujarat.”

NIWE stated that its offshore LiDAR system has recorded a seven year average wind speed in the region at 8.2m/s. A second LiDAR system is also being intended to be installed off the coast of Tamil Nadu by September this year.

Recently, the State Government of Gujarat has approved setting up a 5GW solar park at Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Ahmedabad.

The new solar park aligns with the Central Government of India’s objective to add 175GW of renewable energy by 2022.
