Fortum, Skellefteå Kraft inaugurate 247MW Swedish wind farm

CTBR Staff Writer Published 08 September 2017

Finnish energy company Fortum and Swedish power company Skellefteå Kraft have inaugurated the 247.5MW Blaiken wind farm in Sweden.

The wind farm, which consists of 99 of 2.5MW turbines can produce about 714GWh of clean energy annually.

The clean energy produced from the wind farm is enough to be supplied to more than 161,000 Swedish homes. It is estimated that the wind farm can help in avoiding 690,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

The wind farm was constructed with an investment of SEK3.3bn ($417.8m). Both Skellefteå Kraft and Fortum own 85% and 15% stake in the wind farm, respectively.

Skellefteå Kraft CEO Hans Kreisel stated that wind power plays an important role in the transition to a completely renewable energy generation. The Blaiken wind farm exemplifies how wind power has evolved over the years into a competitive and efficient source of energy.

Considered to be the second largest onshore wind farm in Sweden, it was built in four stages and it took the joint venture company Blaikenvind, formed by the collaboration of Fortum and Skellefteå Kraft, seven years to build it.

Skellefteå Kraft stated that the region in which the wind farm is located makes wind power generation a very good option, as it is usually cold and windy.

Fortum Sweden managing director Per Langer said: "Blaiken is Fortum's first major wind power project and built by it has helped to increase our own wind power skills in general and the challenges the Arctic climate gives specifically.

"This is of great benefit to us today as we continue to develop and build wind power in the Nordic countries and Russia. I would also like to emphasize in particular the good cooperation with Skellefteå Kraft."
