Enel awarded 291MW wind projects in Russia

Published 15 June 2017

Italian energy company Enel’s subsidiary PJSC Enel Russia has been awarded a contract to construct two wind farms in Russia with a total capacity of 291MW.

This contract has been awarded as part of Russian government’s recently announced 1.9GW wind capacity tender.

And, it is part of Russia’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions and generate about 4.5% of its energy from renewable and to reach 5.5GW of installed renewable capacity by 2024.

The two wind projects will be constructed by Enel Russia and the power generated from them will be sold in the Russian wholesale electricity market.

One of the two wind farms, the Azov wind farm will be located in the Rostov region in Southern Russia, is expected to be operational by 2020. This will be a 90MW wind farm, which could generate about 300GWh of clean energy per year, while offsetting about 99,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

The second project, the Murmansk wind farm will be located in the northwestern region of the country and it is expected to come online by 2021, with an installed capacity of 201MW. The wind farm will produce about 730GWh of clean energy per year, while avoiding about 241,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, had the electricity been producing using fossil fuels.

Enel Green Power head Antonio Cammisecra said: “We are very satisfied with this result as we wish to actively contribute to the Russian transition to a greener future. The renewable potential of the country is impressive and still underexploited.

“We see the outcome of this tender as the starting point of a sustainable wind industry in Russia, with benefits for the environment as well as for the full development of a renewable value chain in the country. We can leverage on this huge potential through our unique, global expertise in green energy and our 10-year operational experience in the Russian market.”
