EEW's recently-formed joint venture with Bladt Industries, dubbed Offshore Structures (Britain), will manufacture a major portion of the transition pieces at its Teesside plant.

The remaining pieces will be produced in Aalborg, Denmark. EEW will fabricate monopile foundations at its Rostock facility in Germany.

The Burbo Bank Extension project will feature 32 MHI Vestas Offshore Wind 8MW turbines, which will deliver enough electricity for about 180,000 homes in the UK.

EEW managing director Karl Klös-Hein added: "This will be the first project to be manufactured at Offshore Structures (Britain) Ltd at Teesside.

"We are very happy to get a kick-start for our new UK operation, as manufacturing of the foundations for the Burbo Bank Extension project will start as early as August 2015."

Dong Energy country chairman for the UK Brent Cheshire said: "We are delighted to have awarded this important contract which will bring substantial fabrication work to Teesside.

"With the UK leading the world in the deployment of offshore wind technology, Dong Energy believes it is important that investments feed through to the local supply chain."

Apart from EEW, Dong Energy has also signed contracts with Seaway Heavy Lifting for the transportation and installation of several offshore substations in the UK.

The award consists of three contracts covering the transportation and installation of about five platforms.

The substations will support the power transmission of Burbo Bank Extension, Race Bank and Walney Extension offshore wind farms.
