Dong Energy to setup O&M base for Borssele 1 & 2 wind farms in Netherlands

CTBR Staff Writer Published 21 August 2017

Danish energy giant Dong Energy and the Netherlands-based Zeeland Seaports have signed a letter of intent for setting up a base for operations and maintenance (O&M) for the former’s Borssele 1 & 2 offshore wind farms in Vlissingen Buitenhaven.

Borssele 1 & 2 offshore wind farms are both located in the Dutch North Sea. The two wind farms generate about 752MW of clean energy.

As per the agreement, DONG Energy and Zeeland Seaports will further develop a specific location in Vlissingen Buitenhaven in the coming months.

As per Dong Energy, the two wind farms need a good base from which the operations and maintenance activities can be easily taken up. The company stated that it had set up similar bases in the UK, Germany and Denmark.

DONG Energy Netherlands country manager Jasper Vis said: “We have been welcomed with open arms in Zeeland after winning the tender for Borssele 1&2. We look forward to settling in the province of Zeeland and contributing to further regional economic development and long-term employment.

“We will obviously enter into a dialogue with companies in the region and our future neighbors to explore the options for cooperation.”

DONG Energy Borssele 1&2 programme director Claus Bøjle Møller said: “Vlissingen offers an excellent location for our O&M base in terms of onshore and offshore logistics as well as maritime services for the construction and operation of our new wind farm.”

The two wind farms Borssele 1 & 2, are powered by 94 of Siemens’ turbines, each with a generating capacity of 8MW. The turbines will each have a rotor capacity of 154m and will be installed on monopile structures.

Grid connection point for the two wind farms is at Vlissingen and the nominal electricity supplied will be 220kV. The two wind farms will produce enough clean electricity to power more than 530,000 Dutch homes, while avoiding about 1,070,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
