Acciona to build145MW wind farm in Texas

CTBR Staff Writer Published 11 April 2018

Acciona Energia is all set to build a wind farm with a capacity of 145MW in the US states of Texas, with an investment of $200m.

The Palmas Altas wind farm will be the ninth wind farm for the company in the US and will increase the company’s wind capacity to 866MW.

The wind farm, which will be located in Cameron County, near the San Roman wind farm which was erected by Acciona in December 2016, will generate around 524GWh of clean energy per year.

The amount of power generated by the wind farm will be sufficient to be supplied for 43,000 US households and can offset emissions of about 503,000 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, had the electricity been generated from a coal-fired power station.

The wind farm will employ about 170 people during the peak of the construction and when the operations begin, the wind farm will employ around 10 people.

During its expected lifespan of 25 years, the wind farm could generate about $40m in local taxes and more than $44m in lease payments to local land owners.

For the project, Acciona has selected German turbine-maker Nordex to supply its AW125/3150 model wind turbines.

The clean electricity generated from the wind farm will be sold to in the ERCOT-South Texas wholesale market.

Acciona Energy USA Global CEO Rafael Esteban said: “We are proud to undertake a new wind power project that consolidates the reactivation of our investment activity in the United States and confirms our commitment to grow in a controlled and profitable manner in a market that continues to offer very interesting opportunities for the renewables sector.”

Acciona Energia’s portfolio includes eight wind farms in the US. In addition to 93MW San Roman wind farm, it has three in Oklahoma totaling 329MW, two in the Dakotas totaling 192MW, one in Illinois with 101MW and one in Iowa with 6MW. The company also has a 64MW CSP plant in the Nevada Desert.
