Galloper offshore wind farm with 353MW capacity becomes fully operational

The 353MW Galloper offshore wind farm, located 30km off of the Suffolk coast, UK, has now become fully operational.

Construction of the £1.5bn wind farm began in November 2016. Full power generation was achieved on 29 March, as Siemens Gamesa’s last turbine was switched on.

The project, which includes 56 turbines, is expected to have a life span of about 25 years. It is supported under the UK renewable support scheme.

The wind farm is powered by 6.3MW turbines, with each turbine having a height of 180m and a rotor diameter of about 150m. It can generate enough clean electricity to be supplied to 380,000 UK homes annually.

Galloper project director Toby Edmonds said: “Getting all the turbines switched on means we’ve done it and in record time! We can now celebrate the project moving into the operation phase. Galloper will run for over twenty years ensuring clean renewable energy helping to power a decarbonised UK economy and delivering enough energy for around 380,000 homes annually."

On behalf of the project partners, innogy has been responsible for the development and construction of Galloper wind farm.

The project achieved financial close in October 2015.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy UK managing director Clark MacFarlane said: "The commissioning of the Galloper project is a momentous moment - although Galloper was one of the last projects of its round, it is at the beginning of a new era for offshore wind power in the UK.”

Recently, ESB has acquired the 12.5% stake held in the Galloper wind farm from Macquarie Capital

ESB CEO Pat O’Doherty said: “This investment represents a significant first step for ESB into offshore wind generation. Renewable electricity is a key enabler in the transition to a low carbon economy, and ESB expects offshore wind to play a pivotal role in this transition.”
